Spicy Exotics Dragon Fruit ratings table:

Flavor – When testing for sweetness of the Dragon Fruit a device called a refractometer is used. It uses the brix scale of sweetness. This scale ranges from 0 to 32. The higher the number the sweeter the fruit. In addition to sweetness any unique attributes such as size and flavor are also considered when giving this rating.
Fruit Production – For the rating we look at how many fruits are produced from a single plant. Also, how easy or difficult it is to grow is considered. For example, a variety that is self-fertile will get a higher rating than an non self-fertile variety.
Growing – This is a rating of the overall hardiness of the plant. In addition to this, we also look at how quickly the plant adapts from cuttings and how long it will take before producing the first fruit.

Cosmic Charlie Dragon Fruit Variety

Cosmic Charlie Dragon Fruit is a hybrid variety that comes from Hylocereus guatemalensis and Hylocereus undatus. This variety of Dragon Fruit produces a purple-fleshed fruit with a superb grape-like flavor. These fruits are large averaging 1 to 1.5 pounds. Internet research has said this variety to be self-fertile, however, I have found this to be different. For me, the fruit does not set on its own and needs to be hand-pollinated with another variety. The plant is fast growing with green three-sided growth with small spines on the rib. It is very similar to Hylocereus undatus growth. Additional internet research has stated that 2S and Cosmic Charlie are the same. The 2S is seedling created by Paul Thomson and mentioned in his book Pitahaya. The 2S is a cross between Rixford, a purple-fleshed variety and Niezel, a white-fleshed variety. This variety was acquired from a tropical nursery in California.

This CC variety is such a good fast grower! It shoots out sooo many Air roots it’s crazy! This variety and purple haze were the very first to show signs of new growth. If you are going to only grow one kind this CC variety is one I would highly suggest! It’s very easy to grow and super fast! I myself feel close to this variety cuz my father’s name was Charlie and he passed back in October of 2013.
