Description

Hylocereus Ocamponis

Hylocereus ocamponis is endemic to Mexico. It can be found in the dry state regions of Jalisco and Nayarita. In these states, it is typically found in low dry forests, in rock outcrops, and on large rock formations in its habitat. The plant is a strong but very slow grower with interesting grayish green stems. These stems are very long thick three sided segments with spines. One positive aspect of the plant is its blooms. They are very impressive with bright colors and extra large blooms up to 15 inches in diameter. The variety is not self-pollinating so it will need help with hand pollination. Once pollinated the fruit is a good size with an average weight of one pound. The fruit is egg shaped with a unique look to it. Taste of the fruit has little to no taste with a mildew aftertaste giving it a poor rating. The rating is also poor in our growth rating due to its very slow growth, therefore taking it longer to reach maturity. Once mature the plant flowers from mid to late summer. The Hylocereus costaricensis variety is a Dragon Fruit or Pitaya that is closely related to Hylocereus ocamponis. This variety was acquired from a grower in Illinois.
