Spicy Exotics Dragon Fruit ratings table:

Flavor – When testing for sweetness of the Dragon Fruit a device called a refractometer is used. It uses the brix scale of sweetness. This scale ranges from 0 to 32. The higher the number the sweeter the fruit. In addition to sweetness any unique attributes such as size and flavor are also considered when giving this rating.
Fruit Production – For the rating we look at how many fruits are produced from a single plant. Also, how easy or difficult it is to grow is considered. For example, a variety that is self-fertile will get a higher rating than an non self-fertile variety.
Growing – This is a rating of the overall hardiness of the plant. In addition to this, we also look at how quickly the plant adapts from cuttings and how long it will take before producing the first fruit.

Vivid Purpurea

Vivid Purpurea is a Dragon Fruit hybrid variety that comes from Hylocereus polyrhizus and another unknown species. Some internet research states the other species as an undatus, however, we have not confirmed this. This variety was originally introduced by a nursery in Southern California and it is unknown at this time where the nursery received it from.

The fruit flesh has a purplish reddish flesh with tiny green fins and no spines. Our first fruit had a weight a little over .6 pounds and a brix of 16. We expect both of these numbers to increase as the plant matures. Like most red flesh varieties, the fruit is high in antioxidants.

Flower bud to night-blooming flower is a typical 30 days then another 30 days to harvest in South Louisiana. The flowers of the Vivid Purpurea variety are beautiful and fragrant. On the night of pollination, we set fruit on the first attempt however additional test will be needed to determine if this variety is self-fertile.

Growth of the stem has a normal green color with three-sided edges that have several medium-sized spines. The growth resembles Hylocereus polyrhizus.  More information to come and update as the plant matures. Spicy Exotics aquired this variety from a tropical nursery in California. At this time Vivid Purpurea is not for sale.
