Red ES 1
Red ES 1 Dragon Fruit variety comes from the genus Hylocereus and the species polyrhizus. This variety produces an excellent size fruit typically weighing 1 to 1 and a half pound that is oval-shaped. The external appearance of the fruit dark red with green-tipped fins. The inner flesh is a bright red purplish color with a firm texture that has excellent flavor. The first fruit tested in 2019 had an average brix score of 16. However, where this variety may lack a super high brix score, it makes up for it in the size and flavor category. For these two features alone, we would consider using it as a commercial crop candidate.
The flowers of Red ES 1 are abundant and fragrant. This variety is also a robust grower with large three-sided stems that are bright olive green in color. Small spins occur along the rib line of each stem where they are the first point of contact. Growth and flowers are similar to Lake Atitlan Red and Makisupa Dragon Fruit varieties but the fruits are different. Spicy Exotics is currently testing for self-fertility and collected this variety from a tropical grower in California.
In the past, the Red ES 1 Dragon Fruit variety was one of the types tested at the Pitahaya Festival in California. Spicy Exotics recently collected this variety, and we are glad we did. We find it to be unique and believe RED ES 1 has been renamed and redistributed as some other name due to it’s simple yet complex name.
